100 Objects 55: Millennium Stone

The millennium stone was erected in the year 2000 C.E. The Parish Council and other community leaders felt that a standing stone would be an appropriate reflection of the history and archaeology of the area. Not least because of the prehistoric Longstone to be found on Longstone Common high above the village.  After a county wide search the perfect stone was located in Beacon Quarry just a few hundred yards from the road junction which is its present site.  Local people made donations to cover the costs of moving and erecting the stone.  Buried deep beneath the stone is a time capsule of stainless steel and welded tight shut. Many villagers and children from the school were given small bottles to fill with mementos, and other information, such as Parish Council minutes, were all placed in the capsule.
